The answer to this question is, it never has been.
First of all, America is not one nation, it is several divided up into North, Central and South America. That means people in Brazil are Americans. When many people say "America" they are referring to the United States of America as in this case. So the question really is, "Is the United States of America one nation under God?"
Second, how can the United States of America be one nation under God when we don't even have one church under God? The New Testament teaches there is only one church, not divided into denominations. Denominations are man-made, founded upon man-made dogma. They are not founded upon Christ and the apostles.
To say the United States of America is one nation under God is, at best, wishful thinking. It certainly isn't true. The photo and accompanying article linked above asks the question, "Is America (United States of America) STILL one nation under God?" The word "still" indicates it once was. But, the truth is, it never was. The question should be, "Will the United States of America ever be one nation under God?" It would be nice, but I don't see it. The direction we are on, we are moving further and further away from God.
At one part of the article linked above, it reads, "If we pledge an allegiance that we are “under God,” does this mean we are under His authority? I believe that’s what the “under” means in being “under God.” I agree with this completely which is another reason I say we never were one nation under God, and why I say we don't even have one church under God. Not one part of this nation is under the authority of God, and never has been.
I am not saying there never were any true followers of Christ that came to the United States, otherwise God would have never blessed this Country, if in fact he did. Personally I believe we were blessed by liberty. According to the Preamble to the Constitution, one of the purposes for the Constitution is to secure the blessings of liberty. According to the Declaration of Independence, governments are instituted among men to secure certain unalienable rights such as Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. As long as our liberty and rights have been secured by our Government, we have enjoyed the blessings of liberty. But the Government has been steadily taking away our liberty, which is why we are no longer a blessed Country.
So, whether or not we ever were one nation under God is not really important in what the Government does. As long as the Government was securing the blessings of liberty we have been a vibrant nation, full of promise. We had a healthy economy. The economy is in ruination because we no longer have a Government that secures the blessings of liberty.
When I am President, my Administration will work hard to secure the blessings of liberty. If we ever do become one nation under God, that would be a bonus.
