AN APPLE A DAY
by Tom Lineaweaver
There is an old saying that I've heard as I was growing up, although not much lately, "And apple a day keeps the doctor away." Dr. McCoy, on an episode of Star Trek, when he and Captain Kirk were discussing some kind of wonder drug, said, "Poppycock. I can do more for you if you just eat right and exercise regularly." The idea that a nutritious diet and healthy exercise would do wonders for the body is a concept that doesn't seem to be taught anymore. Although Michelle Obama tried to, and you see what happened to her. She was greatly ridiculed. But she was right. And before anyone asks, no we should make it law. But, there should be a law that doctors must learn nutrition, and they must recommend a healthy diet before they give their patients big pharma poisons.
When I am President, I will promote healthy diet and exercise as a prevention to many diseases. In fact, I've been working on that myself, and I have been feeling better lately than I have in a long time. The average American diet actually promotes diseases in you body. As the old saying goes, "garbage in, garbage out." Americans are eating garbage and it's making them sick. If Americans ate healthy, they can be healthy, and be more productive on the job. So, a healthy diet is good for the economy.
Don't be surprised if I ask Michelle Obama to stay on and head up the President's Healthy Living Campaign. There is a book called, "None of These Diseases." One of the few books I read in my lifetime.
You read this book, then you will understand how a poor diet can make you sick. Have a healthy diet and you will be healthy. True, there are behavioral diseases that a diet can't help. If you have behavior where you risk getting the virus that causes AIDS, a healthy diet won't hurt, but it won't prevent it. So, not only should you have a healthy diet, you should also have a healthy lifestyle.
President Kennedy saw the need for physical fitness...
A healthy diet is important in physical fitness. However, I don't believe it should be a mandate of Government. It should be voluntary. We should not mandate schools to have some Government program, but rather we should promote healthy living at home, to urge parents to give their children proper nutrition, and encourage their children to have healthy exercise, to get their children involved with organizations like the YMCA.
We will certainly not condemn schools that want to have a healthy living program, and I think Michelle Obama would be great at overseeing that part of my Healthy Living Campaign. I don't know that she would, but she would be a good choice to run this Campaign.
